Inspired by the legendary Prince Bira

In the late 1900s, during the reign of King Rama VII, Prince Birabongse Bhanudej Bhanubandh (Prince Bira) and Prince Chula Chakrabongse (Prince Chula) of Siam developed a passion for racing while living abroad in England. In 1935 they founded a racing team called White Mouse Siam, which Price Bira raced for under the nickname B.Bira. He joined the British Racing Drivers Club (BRDC) and raced in a blue Riley Imp race car.

Prince Bira started racing more after he turned 21 years old. He became well-known internationally, especially in Europe where he competed. He raced a series of English Racing Automobiles (ERA) cars painted in striking blue and yellow livery that had fanciful nicknames from mythology such as “Romulus, Remus and Hanuman”. His signature color is now known as Bira Blue. He favored racing the ERA Romulus while abroad, and ERA Remus while in England. His first triumph was at the Coupe de Prince Rainier in Monaco on 11 April 1936.

Besides the two ERAs, he also owned a 1936 Series Maserati 8CM decorated with his team mascot, the White Mouse, and a Siamese Flag. At the time his best performances were 5th Place in Donnington and 3rd Place in Brooklands.

King George the V bestowed upon Prince Bira the high honor of “BRDC Road Racing Gold Star” in a row for three years (1936-1938). He also received the honor of being named in the British Racing Association Hall of Fame.

After World War II ended, Price Bira returned to racing in 1948 at 34 years old. He switched to racing in a Maserati 4CLT/48 and competed in the British Grand Prix when the Federation Internationale de l’Automobile (FIA) first sanctioned Formula One. This makes him the first and the only Thai citizen to have participated in a Formula One race. He kept racing until 1954 and had many outstanding results and the best one was, placing 4th in the 1954 French Grand Prix, where he raced alongside other world legendary racers such as Juan Manuel Fangio and Giuseppe Farina.

ในปลายศตวรรษที่ 19 ช่วงรัชสมัยของพระบาทสมเด็จพระปกเกล้าเจ้าอยู่หัว รัชการที่ 7 ระหว่างที่พระองค์เจ้าพีระพงษ์ภานุเดช (พระองค์เจ้าพีระฯ) และพระองค์เจ้าจุลจักพงษ์ (พระองค์จุลฯ) ทรงประทับ ณ สหราชอาณาจักร ได้ทรงโปรดปรานการแข่งรถยนต์เป็นอย่างยิ่ง จนได้ก่อตั้งทีมแข่งรถร่วมกันในปี 1935 ในนาม White Mouse Siam หรือทีมหนูขาวสยาม โดยมีพระองค์เจ้าพีระฯ เป็นนักแข่งภายใต้สมญานามว่า B.Bira พระองค์จ้าพีระฯ ได้เริ่มการแข่งขันครั้งแรกในเดือนมีนาคม ณ สนาม Brooklands ด้วยรถยี่ห้อ Riley Imp เฉดสีฟ้า ทั้งยังได้สมัครเข้าร่วมสมาชิกสโมสรนักแข่งอังกฤษ British Racing Drivers Club (BRDC) อีกด้วย

เมื่อพระชันษาครบ 21 ปี พระองค์เจ้าพีระฯ จึงได้เริ่มแข่งขันอย่างจริงจังในระดับนานาชาติจนมีชื่อเสียงโด่งดัง โดยเฉพาะในประเทศยุโรปที่ได้เข้าร่วมการแข่งขันเป็นประจำใช้รถแข่ง ERA ที่มีชื่อว่า “Remus, Romulus และ หนุมาน” ทาสีฟ้า คาดแถบเหลือง ซึ่งต่อมาสีฟ้านี้มีชื่อว่า “ฟ้าพีระ” โดยทรงโปรดใช้ ERA Remus ในสหราชอาณาจักร และ ERA Romulus เพื่อการแข่งขันประเทศอื่นๆ และได้ทรงคว้าชัยชนะครั้งแรกในการแข่งขัน Coupe de Prince Rainier ที่โมนาโก เมื่อวันที่ 11 เมษายน 1936

นอกจากรถแข่ง ERA แล้วพระองค์ยังทรงเป็นเจ้าของรถแข่ง Maserati 8CM รุ่น 1936 ซึ่งถูกตบแต่งด้วยธงชาติสยามและสัญลักษณ์หนูขาวประจำทีม ส่วนผลงานที่โดดเด่นของพระองค์ได้แก่ ที่ 5 ในการแข่งที่สนาม Donnington และที่ 3 ในสนาม Brooklands พระองค์พีระฯ ประสบความสำเร็จอย่างมากจนได้รับพระราชทานรางวัลเหรียญดาราทอง BRDC Road Racing Gold Star 3 ปีซ้อนในปี 1936 -1938 พระบาทสมเด็จพระเจ้าจอร์จที่ 5 แห่งสหราชอาณาจักร ทั้งยังได้รับเกียรติบรรจุชื่อในหอเกียรติยศ (Hall of Fame) ของสมาคมนักแข่งรถอังกฤษ

หลังสงครามโลกครั้งที่ 2 สิ้นสุดลง ในปี 1948 พระองค์พีระในวัย 34 ปี ได้กลับลงสู่สนามแข่งรถอีกครั้ง และได้เปลี่ยนมาใช้รถ Maserati 4CLT/48 ในการแข่งขัน ในปีเดียวกันนั้น ทางสหพันธ์รถยนต์นานาชาติ FIA ได้สถาปนาการแข่งขันรถสูตร 1 หรือ Formula One ขึ้นเป็นครั้งแรก ภายใต้ชื่อรายการ British Grand Prix โดยพระองค์เจ้าพีระได้ทรงเข้าร่วมแข่งขันในการชิงแชมป์โลกที่ยิ่งใหญ่ที่สุดนี้เป็นครั้งแรกด้วย โดยใช้รถ Maserati 250F และ Maserati A6GCM และนี่ทำให้พระองค์เจ้าพีระฯ ทรงเป็นนักแข่ง Formula One คนแรกและคนเดียวของประเทศไทยจวบจนทุกวันนี้ ทั้งนี้ พระองค์ได้ทรงทำการแข่งขัน Formula One ต่อเนื่องจนถึงปี 1954 และมีผลงานที่ยอดเยี่ยมจากการแข่งขันมากมาย โดยผลงานที่ดีที่สุดคือได้ที่ 4ในการแข่งขันเฟร็นช์กรังด์ปรีซ์ 1954 ซึ่งการแข่งขันในครั้งนั้น ได้ทรงเข้าร่วมแข่งขันกับนักแข่งระดับตำนานของโลกเช่น  Juan Manuel Fangio และ Giuseppe Farina
